Learning to paint ferns. This was an exercise I did last year – researching how to paint ferns in acrylic paint.
I first worked on the maidenhair fern, but wasn’t completely happy with it. So I moved on to the fishbone fern – that’s the one that I used in my FLOWERS FOR YOU painting.
In hindsight, the maidenhair fern wasn’t too bad.
What do you think?

Happy fun Monday! I hope you enjoy this sketchbook work.

Nice work, I always love painting ferns. Once you start looking it’s amazing the different types.
I like adding broken ones that have gone brown for more realism

Oh that’s a good idea. I didn’t think of that. I wanted these ones to be green and fresh though, so I’m happy with how they worked out.

Thanks Kym. It was an interesting exercise to really look at the ferns and work out how to represent them. 🥰
