Why are gum trees called gum trees?

Why are gum trees called gum trees? Eucalyptus trees are referred to as gum trees because of the thick, sticky resin they ooze when their trunks are injured.

When you are in the Australian bush or national parklands, away from the noise of traffic, a calmness surrounds you. You can hear the wind in the leaves, crickets chirping, magpies singing, kookaburras laughing in the distance. That was the idea behind this painting.
