A Quiet Moment by the Water: One Pelican, Four Ways of Seeing

Some moments in nature ask us to slow down.

This one began quietly, by the water, with a pelican who allowed me to come a little closer. I spoke softly, asking if I could take his photo. He didn’t move away — and I took that as a yes.

Back in my studio, I opened the photograph on my phone and reached for a 4B pencil. I sketched my new friend slowly, letting the lines find their way without rush. Still filled with inspiration, I painted him again — first in gentle watercolour, then once more in acrylics.

The same pelican.
The same moment.
Seen through different materials, different moods, and different kinds of quiet.

This small collection became an exploration of how art materials influence feeling — how pencil holds tenderness, watercolour carries softness, and acrylic brings presence and strength. It’s a reminder that nature offers endless inspiration when we take the time to truly see.

These artworks are not about perfection, but about attention — about honouring a fleeting encounter and allowing it to unfold slowly through creative practice.

Which version speaks to you most?
