My first acrylic painting

Acrylic Still Life | Sandra Burns Art

This was my very first acrylic painting, 40+ years ago.

What I don’t like about this artwork:

  • The background colours are not solid enough – too patchy.

What I love about this artwork:

  • I love the composition, the way the subject stands tall and proud.
  • I love the changing colours of the background, like the colours of autumn.
  • I even love the solid line breaks between the colours, a definition of change.
  • I love the use of black paint for the subject with white wax pencils to provide highlights.
  • I love the shading and contrasts.
  • I love the size – this is big (38 cm x 56cm).

Summary:
I love way more than I hate about this artwork.

There is nothing living about this subject, but it is here, it is present, and it brings joy.

When I look at this painting, I see the light and dark of the branches… and I think about how everything has light and dark, working together. Opposite forces, working in a complementary way, to complete the whole.

Art has always been in my veins, this was completed as a high school art project.

Tell me in the comments:
What do you see/feel when you look at this art?

This artwork holds sentimental value to me – being “my first”.

For now, this piece goes back into my art folder. Despite what I like and and what I don’t like about this particular piece, I have a strong feeling that this is going to inspire some new artwork!

I had thought about taking a paint brush and trying to improve the areas I don’t like.

But then I think, why not just start over and create a whole new piece? A copy of this original. A new original artwork. So be on the lookout for a new improved version in a future post.

  1. I actually do like this painting. At first, I thought you should add color, but after reflection, I like it just the way it is. It is clean, uncluttered, and I feel like the buds could open any second and bring forth magical color.
