Acrylic Painting – Flowers

This original acrylic painting is titled “Flowers For You”. I love the beautiful deep colours in this painting. When I look at it, I feel happy.

But it wasn’t always that way…

This artwork started out as my first attempt at surrealist art. In case you don’t know, surrealism is a form of art that rejects the rational vision of life in favour of a vision that represents the unconscious or dreams.

The final version is a long journey from where it started out.

And here’s why…

Making “Flowers For You”

As I said, this was going to be a surrealist artwork – a dreamscape version of a bouquet of flowers.

Not far into this project, I sent a photo to a couple of friends asking how they felt it was going. This is the image I sent to my friends, explaining that it was surrealist art, it wasn’t finished yet, and asking what they thought.

My friends, while trying not to hurt my feelings, replied with various ways in which I could “fix” my painting. They hated that one flower was bigger than the other. Clearly this art was not pleasing.

So in my artistic journey, we now know that I’m not a surrealist artist. 🙂

The Finished Product

After making some changes at the suggestion of my friends, and then more changes (because even I was unimpressed by that point), here is the finished product. And I really like it.

Note: practically all evidence the of surrealism has gone. 🙂

I love the colours in the flowers – the deep magenta mixed with black, white and gold, and the gold tips on the petals.

This was the first time I have used my gold paint. I’m sure I’ll be looking for more opportunities for gold from now on.
